LOCAL ELECTIONS
Closer to home, VPAR actively engaged with candidates seeking office to the City Council in Newport News, the City Council in Hampton and the Hampton Mayoral election.
Over the course of two days, the VPAR Public Policy Committee (PPC) conducted in-person interviews with 13 candidates seeking local office. Along with written questionnaires that a majority of the candidates submitted to the Committee, the process covered issues including housing stock and housing opportunity, public safety, schools, workforce and economic development, college student retention, short term rentals, redevelopment and repurposing of gray scale buildings, relationships with the military and federal installations, recurrent flooding and resiliency, regionalism and collaborations on issues with VPAR.
In Hampton, long-serving Mayor Donnie Tuck chose not to seek re-election. Vice Mayor Jimmy Gray was elected to that position, and VPAR proudly endorsed Mr. Gray.
For the Hampton City Council elections, three seats were available in the general election, and one special election was held to complete the term of Vice Mayor Gray. Councilwoman Hope Harper was re-elected and received VPAR’s endorsement; newcomer Randy Bowman was elected to Council and received VPAR’s endorsement; and Neighborhood Commissioner Carolyn Campbell was elected to her first term on Council. While VPAR did not endorse Ms. Campbell, we already have established good working relationships her. Former Councilmember Michelle Ferebee won her bid in the special election to complete the term of Jimmy Gray; the PPC was pleased to have endorsed Ms. Ferebee.
VPAR extends its appreciation to Councilmembers Chris Bowman and Billy Hobbs for their years of service to the City. Neither of these gentlemen were re-elected. We especially want to thank Councilman Hobbs, who consistently has received the PPC’s endorsement from the first time he ran for Council, for the ongoing support he has provided to our issues throughout his 12 years on City Council.
Turning to Newport News, VPAR endorsed incumbent Councilman Marcellus Harris in the North District, who ran unopposed, as well as Councilwoman Tina Vick from the South District. VPAR looks forward to continuing our good work together! In the Central District, former Councilman Rob Coleman successfully defeated a strong field of candidates in this open seat; VPAR was proud to endorse Mr. Coleman’s campaign.
VPAR looks forward to continuing the partnership we have with all of our elected officials at the local, state and federal levels. Our trust-based relationships yield access to these men and women and their staffs, provide opportunities to mutually participate in policy development, and give YOU, our members, the confidence that the REALTOR® Party perspectives are top of mind.
