Joseph “Joe” Leo Carney Jr., 80, of Newport News, passed away after a battle with a chronic medical condition on May 14, 2021. He passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home surrounded by some of his closest friends.
Joe was a proud Air Force Vietnam Veteran, serving his country for over 23 years. After a successful military career, Joe turned his attention and his gift of human connection to a second successful career in real estate, finishing his 30-year career at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services.
One of his biggest passions was giving back to those who needed a hand up, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity by running the company golf tournament over the last 25 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Loretta, and his brother Jim. He is survived by his son Art Carney (Melissa); daughter Melissa Frazer (Jeff); 5 grandchildren, Samantha, Wyatt, and Mason Carney, and James and Rosey Frazer; his three sisters, Sharon, Sue, and Margaret; and many, many friends who were important in his life.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 PM Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at W. J. Smith & Son Funeral Home. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 9 AM Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Albert G. Horton, Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery in Suffolk.
